It was just one week before his 85th birthday. Alarcon was a World War II veteran who had long-standing roots in the San Fernando Valley. He moved with his parents to North Hollywood from Texas in 1923 and remained in the Valley for the rest of his life, attending Roscoe Elementary School in Sun Valley and North Hollywood High School. On Thursday, Sen. Alarcon, D-Van Nuys, credited his father with instilling a sense of fairness and justice that influenced his political career. “He was a very fair man,” he said in a phone interview. “He always told us no matter where someone came from, no matter the color of your skin, you give them every chance and treat them equally and let them show you what kind of person they are before you judge them.” last_img read more
