PM Urges NHT to Provide More Affordable Housing Solutions

first_imgRelatedWork Commences on Granville to Retirement Road in St. James Contact:    Communications Unit-OPM FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmail Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, has called on the members of the Board of the National Housing Trust (NHT) to be far more aggressive in its pursuit of providing affordable housing solutions for NHT contributors. In a meeting with the members of the NHT Board on Thursday (September 6), the Prime Minister who also has Ministerial responsibility for the NHT, implored them to pay special attention to the young professionals, many of whom are unable to afford some of the houses now being built by the NHT. The Prime Minister also called on the Board members to be sensitive to the disabled community when housing solutions are built, by putting in the necessary features to comfortably accommodate those beneficiaries who are physically challenged. She also took the opportunity to remind the Board members of the raft of NHT related promises she made in her Budget presentation earlier this year and that she was looking for all these promises to become a reality within the timeframe outlined. Those promises include the construction of houses to be accessed by sugar workers and hotel workers. The Prime Minister further pointed out that the NHT was never established just to build housing solutions, but to create schemes with all the necessary features of modern communities, including working in collaboration with other agencies of the Government and the private sector, to provide amenities such as community centres, basic schools and playing areas. Such conditions guarantee the successful implementation of new measures, which will have a positive impact on the population by easing migratory procedures, said the authorities, cited by PL news agency.According to the new regulations, passport applications can be made at local ID registration, or immigration offices throughout the country. Some 195 of those offices exist on the island, according to the national media. Although there has been an increase in the number of passport applications, the service has developed appropriately. The new measures announced on October 16, also eliminate the need for a permit to travel abroad and a letter of invitation that was formerly required for this purpose. The migration update also extends the permit for Cuban citizens to stay out of the country from 11 to 24 months without losing their residency and allows the departure of youths under 18 years, with prior authorization by their parents or legal representatives. As to Cubans living abroad, the regulations allow their visit to the island for a period of 90 days, 60 days more than what was previously permitted. Meanwhile, repatriation is another aspect considered for those who left Cuba for humanitarian reasons. Caribbean News Nowlast_img read more
