Special team play sparks Wellington’s domination over Rose Hill 38-7

first_imgWellington’s offensive line of Braden Struble, Julian Burden, Kanden Young, Jake Soria and Kenny Fehrman provided great protection for the backs all evening against Rose Hill.by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — A couple weeks ago, one could attribute Wellington’s win to the offense. Last week, one could say it was the defense. Friday night in Rose Hill, one could say it was the special teams. The Crusaders improved to 4-1 with a 38-7 victory over Rose Hill Friday.Wellington would score 8 of its first 14 points on a blocked punt and miscue thereafter to give the Crusaders a 14-0 lead. Late in the game, Karsten Gill would kick a 26 yard field goal, the first for Wellington since 2010. It has been a long time coming.“If it had not been for the special teams, I’m not sure we would have scored in the first half,” said Zane Aguilar, Wellington head football coach. “As far as Karsten, I’m so happy for him. I’m convinced he will win one for us.”Wellington is sitting pretty in the Class 4A West race where teams will be seeded based on record. The Crusaders are currently the second seed with a 4-1 record and 39 net points – behind only McPherson, which is 5-0 with 65 and ahead of Goddard with 39 points. Things get tougher for the Crusaders in the next three weeks. Wellington battles Labette County (3-2), Winfield (2-3) and Mulvane (3-2). As far as Rose Hill, Wellington was clearly the better team, but had trouble generating a lot of offense in the first half. The Crusaders took a 14-0 first quarter lead in a rather unconventional way. On Rose Hill’s first drive of negative 3 yards, Isaac Hilt would block a punt in the end zone. The ball was mishandled and a Rose Hill player recovered giving the Crusaders a 2-0 lead.On the next drive, Michael Ledbetter connected with DeAndre Washington on a 31-yard pass reception to the 4.Two plays later, Ledbetter scores from the 1 to give the Dukes an 8-0 lead. Then after Rose Hill’s offense stalled again, a towering snap over the Rocket punter’s head led to Wellington getting the ball at the 1. Ledbetter scored again from the 1 and it was 14-0.Rose Hill pieced together its best play of the night, driving to the 9. But Wellington’s defense would pin Rose Hill for three losses in a row and took over on downs. The Crusaders had little success offensively the rest of the half and took a 14-0 lead into the locker room.Zander Vargas ran for 102 yards as Wellington wins big Friday night. At the beginning of the second half, Wellington would recover a fumble deep in Rose Hill territory and Zander Vargas would rumble in for a 13-yard score to  give the Crusaders a 21-0 lead.Late in the third, Ledbetter would connect with Caleb Reichenberger on a crossing rout to put the Crusaders up 28-0, 3:37 in third.Late in the game, Hilt would score on a 24 yard run to make it 35-0. Gill would follow with a field goal, the first for Wellington since the Obama’s first term. Rose Hill scored with 51 seconds left to prevent the shutout.Statistically, Wellington had 283 yards of offense to Rose Hill’s 82. In the past two games, Wellington’s defense has held opponents to 22 yard in combined passing yards. If the Crusaders could do that a third time against a highly touted and Iowa State University bound Easton Dean, the quarterback from Labette, then that will be a major accomplishment.
