Oxford goes into playoffs on hot streak; plays West Elk Tuesday

Oxford is Sumner County’s lone district champion. The Wildcats rolled Central-Burden 46-0 Thursday night. It had already clinched the district championship last week. But this one was to put an exclamation point to a great regular season.The Wildcats will now host West Elk Tuesday evening in the first round of the Class eight-man division 1 playoffs. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.Oxford has rattled off six straight games and was undefeated in its district. In the past two weeks, the Wildcats have outscored their opponents by a margin of 118-0.Here’s some history for you. This is the first time in Oxford history that the Wildcats have won a district championship in eight-man football and the first time a district was won since that talented bunch of Wildcats in 2006.Thursday’s game was over at halftime. Oxford opened up a 14-0 first quarter lead on the Raiders and then exploded in the second quarter with 32 unanswered points.Oxford opened with a Dalton Silhan touchdown run. He rushed for 77 yards for the night.The Cats then added a touchdown pass from Cal Shimkus to Tyler Vaughn for 26 yards and it was a 14-0 lead.Oxford would explode for four touchdowns in the second quarter as Shimkus ran for 9 yards. Ty Carter, just a freshman, caught the next two passes for touchdowns of 38 and 9 yards.Then Vaughn would seal the win with a 57 yard interception runback.Oxford will have its hands full on Tuesday. The Cats played West Elk in week 2 losing 68-20. But a lot changes from September to November. For the bracket of the state playoffs click here.
