The VCR will be responsible for developing andimplementing a long-term strategic direction for the basic,clinical, and translational research programs in the departmentwith input and collaboration from the faculty and Chair of theDepartment. This includes efforts to promote and enhance researchcollaboration and the development of team research projects. Theywill lead efforts for hiring faculty and trainees who areinterested in pursuing research that contributes to our strategicplan. They will ensure that financial support, space, and otherresources are available to our current research groups, as well asour future new hires, by coordinating assistance from ourdepartment, the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, and theGraduate School. They will serve as chair of the departmentalResearch & Development (R&D) committee. They will provideoversight for departmental research managers and administrators,and for pre- and post-award processing of external grant funding;manage our internal R&D funds and assure satisfactory progressof funded research projects; and help advance nominations ofdepartment members for internal and external research awards.- Teaching and Mentoring. The VCR will provide instruction,mentoring, and support for faculty, fellows, residents, andstudents who are interested and/or involved in research.Educational opportunities may include didactic teaching in thedepartment, the medical school, and the graduate school.- Research. The VCR will be provided time and resources to pursuetheir own research interests. The successful candidate will beawarded the Bamforth Research Distinguished Chair inAnesthesiology.- Clinical Service. Physician applicants will be given theopportunity, and in many cases expected to provide clinical servicein their area of specialization.
