Teachers urged to help commemorate OECS Day

first_img Share Share Tweet Share Sharing is caring!center_img President of the Dominica Association of Teachers (DAT), Celia Nicholas (file photo)A senior educator here has called on teachers to ensure that activities to commemorate OECS Day are included in their school’s calendar of activities.OECS Day is celebrated annually on June 18 in recognition of the signing of the Treaty of Basseterre establishing the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) on June 18, 1981 in Basseterre, St. Kitts.President of the Dominica Association of Teachers (DAT), Celia Nicholas, noted that it is important to celebrate OECS Day because although the OECS is thirty-three years old, “we find there’s ignorance about OECS”.Mrs Nicholas, who was addressing the start of the Dominica Association of Teachers, Ministry of Education, Canadian Teachers Federation Summer Workshop on July 10, 2014, applauded Dominica for being “the only country in the OECS which celebrates OECS Day”.Every year, the DAT, in collaboration with early educators and preschools, spearhead activities to commemorate the day.This year’s celebration took the form of a Street Parade from the Dominica Export Import Agency (DEXIA) compound to the Government Headquarters, followed by an exhibition highlighting crops/foods from OECS islands.“I would like all the early educators to come on board, some are not on board,” Mrs Nicholas said.“I know around that time for the secondary schools and the primary schools, people are laden with exams but OECS Day is very important to us”.“So I need all of us, for next year, to have a program at your school; be it five minutes, be it ten minutes, because I will say some teachers do not know about the OECS,” Mrs Nicholas indicated. The OECS is a nine member grouping comprising Antigua and Barbuda, Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines.
