SPIN.PH MANILA – Marianne Sotomil made her collegiate debut in University of the Philippines Lady Maroons as they beat University of Perpetual Help Lady Altas 25-10, 25-12, 25-23 in the 2018 Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at the San Juan Arena.A native of Pavia, Iloilo, Sotomil played lengthy minutes in the second and third set to finish with 2 points, including a service ace, while also accounting for a number of assists.“Medyo kinabahan pa ako noong start kaya medyo hindi maganda iyong setting ko but noong nag-settle down na ako naging OK naman na,” Sotomil said after the July 28 match.Isa Molde was the lone double-figure scorer with 14 points while Marian Buitre chipped in 7 markers for Lady Maroons, which played without injured veteran Diana Carlos. Lady Maroons had a strong start in the opening set as it surged to a 15-4 lead and later widening this to as high as 15 points. The same went in the second frame where UP went ahead 20-9.But UP struggled early in the third frame and had to rely on veterans to tie the count 23-all before Molde and Ai Gannaban scored back-to-back to win the match.“In the third set, we were trying to do things in a haste,” said Lady Maroons coach Godfrey Okumu. “We were in a hurry. Those are some of all the small things that happen in the game. We were able to recover because we knew what we were doing right.”Meanwhile University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses continued its winning ways after a 25-18, 25-16, 25-21 sweep of San Beda Lady Red Spikers.
