Woeful Shooting Dooms Argos in Loss to Tampa 56-42

first_img Share Dec. 16, 2007 Box Score  TAMPA, Fla. – The Argonauts played hard, but just couldn’t make any baskets, as they ended the first half with the lowest shooting percentage for a half in the Coach Bergen era, at 18 percent. West Florida only hit seven shots in 38 attempts in the first half. Despite the horrific shooting, the Argonauts were only down seven points with 11:35 to play, which was a credit to their hustle. However, it was not enough to make up for the poor shooting.West Florida missed five of their first seven shots and fell behind 13-2 just three minutes into the contest. The Argos scrappy defense kept them in the game, and they pulled to within 18-15 on a three pointer from Laura Davis. However, the Argos would miss their next 17 shots until Caitlin Salak hit a jumper with 30 seconds left in the half. Tampa outscored the Argos 15-2 in the final eight minutes of the first half.West Florida shot better in the second half, but finally ran out of gas, having to play full court defense to make up for the halftime deficit. UWF trailed 50-40 with four minutes remaining and missed two opportunities to cut the lead inside of 10 points, but missed both shots, and Tampa ended the game with four free throws to extend the final score to 56-42. The Argos drop to 5-6 on the season, and have dropped three straight road games.Tampa, now 8-2 on the season, was previously ranked 25th in the nation, but had just dropped out of the top 25 after last week’s lost to West Georgia. The Spartans had to work for the win, but the poor shooting by the Argos was the main difference in the contest. West Florida missed 55 of their 72 shots, while Tampa only shot 51 times. The extra shots were a credit to the West Florida defense as they recorded 14 steals, to only six for Tampa, but just couldn’t convert those opportunities into points.Laura Davis led the Argos with 12 points, while Renee Polk and Tara Russ each secured seven rebounds. Sheena Walton led the Spartans with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and six blocked shots. For the Argos, Chelsea Patterson chipped in with nine points, and Dominique Boykins added six points. Tiffany Scott came off the bench to play some impressive defense, as she recorded four steals in the contest.West Florida will return to action on December 29th and 30th, with hopes that the homecourt can help produce better shooting percentages. The Argos will host Henderson State and Arkansas Monticello in the Holiday Classic with both games being at 2:00 pm at the UWF Fieldhouse.
